A rock that soaks up carbon dioxide?
Asked on: 15 Nov 2008
Quote: By Timothy Gardner
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A rock found mostly in Oman can be harnessed to soak up the main greenhouse gas carbon dioxide at a rate that could help slow global warming, scientists say.
When carbon dioxide comes in contact with the rock, peridotite, the gas is converted into solid minerals such as calcite.
Geologist Peter Kelemen and geochemist Juerg Matter said the naturally occurring process can be supercharged 1 million times to grow underground minerals that can permanentl...

Is Argon Heavier Than Carbon Dioxide?
Asked on: 17 Jul 2006
Just racked my one gallon of coffee wine, and when I pulled the solid stopper after sitting for two months it made a loud pop. Apparently it wasn't done fermenting as much as I thought. Anyway I had filled the air space with argon (high-jacked my son's argon tank from his welder )
My question is does it work to fill air space with argon and then put an airlock on? Will the little bit of Co2 still being given off just go up through the argon layer or will it take away the argon? I doubt there wil...

Modern Uses for Sulfur Dioxide?
Asked on: 10 Jul 2004
I was reading (in my HVAC/R text) that sulfur dioxide was used as a dual purpose refrigerant/lubricant in some machines in the 19th century, and was used on British warships up until the 1940's.
I was wondering if there were any similar modern uses for sulfur dioxide? Also wondering if there are other modern refrigerants that are used as dual purpose?
