Choosing which programs to remove from startup?

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista on it. It has the typical
performance problems that have been noted for laptops running Vista. It
receives a "Windows Experience Index" of 2.0.
The first thing you are told to do to improve performance is eliminate
programs from startup. But when I go through the long list of programs, I
often can't tell what they do. For instance, I see in this list "Avantquest
Digital Line Detection," "Dell Quick Set," "Synaptics Pointing Device," and
"Java (TM) Platfor...

Generic FakeAlert.b an W32/Nuwar@MM and possibly more?

I know I have or had "Generic FakeAlert.b" and "W32/Nuwar@MM" on my computer. Just got infected today and don't know what to do. McAfee said that it detected the problem and caught the trojans, and even quarantined them... but apparently that did not work and still ended up infected. So here I am.
Can you please help me?

McAfee Found Trojan & removed. Is my machine clean?

I had copied a file from my own website to my harddrive to make a minor change. Immediately, McAfee found a Trojan. Attached Vista snips show alerts received from McAfee. First alert when I copied the file. Second one (dated 7/17) when I booted up this morning. I contacted my web designer and they had found the same Trojan and removed it. They've locked down the website. I want to know if there are any traces of any infections left on my machine or any other malware that has gone undetected. I r...

Possible rootkit?

I have AVG AntiRootKit Free version on my computer. Every time that I run it it finds a rootkit in the following path c:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\ .sys (with the x's as random characters) and asks me if i want to remove it and reboot. I do so and it finds another with a different random name. I posted here once before and it was suggested that it might be Daemon tools doing this and that I should remove it and try again (I am creating a new post because I took too long to reply to the old post)....

Hijacked Port?

I am no longer able to run my webserver with a listener on port 8080. Some new process is now listening on this port. None of the virus scanners have found anything. Is it malware? Here's output from netstat relevant to this port:

Critical System Error?

There is a pop-up continually appearing on my Laptop from the taskbar that states that my computer is infected with virus and it may cause critical system failure. :mad:. I downloaded Ewido and TrojanHunter and ran sweeps...however the popup still appears on the screen. My laptop is running relatively slow and i cannot access some webpages that need an username and password (eg. Yahoo Mail, etc :lol:. ) (Currently sending typing this from my Home Computer.)

Help - do I have a virus?

Today my Inspiron's monitor suddenly quit. After a few restarts, I seemed back on track, but I cannot open anything but Firefox. No control panel, no Outloox Express, no McAfee. Not even in Safe Mode.
Afraid I had a virus, I tried to upgrade my McAfee, but the download manager won't respond. Searching for symptoms, I found this site.
I made a HijackThis log - can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
