SBS-8 slower cores vs 4 faster cores?   Asked on: 18 Nov 2008
I'm working on specing out a server to Quote: a new client. The install will be nothing out of the ordinary - 10 users w/AD, Exchange, file & printer sharing, WSUS, AV, and a proprietary DB program that they have. They're on a fairly tight budget, so I had originally configured a PE1900 for them w/dual quad core Xeon E5310s(1.6g/1066m) because they could get the second processor for free at the time. That promo has since expired, so they can get a single quad core E5345 (2.33g/1333mhz) for the s...

How do quad-cores decide which cores to run?   Asked on: 28 Nov 2008
hi there, i have quite an old AMD64 3500+ system which i assembled over 3 years ago, and think it's a good time to jump on the multi-core bandwagon. i'm thinking of the Intel Core2 Quad Q9550. since i tend to only upgrade/change system every 3+ years, i thought perhaps the Q9550 right now would be a good buy till my next purchase. my usual usage pattern would be: running several web browser windows with many tabs per browser, word processing, outloook, MSN Messenger, anti-virus background, playi...

Core i7, other Quad-cores or Dual-Cores for gaming?   Asked on: 09 Dec 2008
I hear there are a few issues with quad-cores in general for gaming. I understand most won't use up more than two cores, but if I bought a quad-core will most games allow the use of at least two cores or will there be issues with the rendering? A 2.66GHz Core i7 920 for $300: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 Or a 2.4GHz Q6600 for $185: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 Or a 3.16GHz E8500 for $188: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115036 I wi...

Two G5 Single cores = 1 dual core?   Asked on: 09 Nov 2008
So if you possibly obtained two G5 1.6 GHz single cores, with some finagling, would it be at all possible to create a dual core out of that? Would it involve different hardware or software? Or is it just impossible?

Quad core running as 2 cores?   Asked on: 14 Jan 2008
I noticed when I put this new folding rig together (XFX 680iLT motherboard and Q6600) that task manager under Win2K shows only two cores. At first I thought with was simply a Win2K anomaly, but today I noticed that CPU-Z shows only two cores also. The drivers that shipped with the board are only for XP and Vista. All four cores are enabled in the BIOS. Any ideas why I am only using half my processors?

Support for 8 cores?   Asked on: 30 Nov 2008
Hi all, The PC I use for ripping/converting has 8 cores, and because Batch Converter can handle multi-core, I assumed that it would be able to take advantage of all the cores the PC has. When converting 5,000 FLAC to MP3s though, the program doesn't touch the second processor at all. Is it possible to perform a batch convert and use all 8 cores (or even more)? Thanks much for any help!

Best use of multiple cores?   Asked on: 26 Jan 2008
Best use of multiple cores?   The Penryn 8-way (dual quad-core Xeon) Mac Pros have been released, and I've been promising myself one ever since the rumors started. That means I'll be switching from a dual-core Windows XP desktop to a Mac Pro with Parallels to run my Windows XP apps. I know that Parallels (unlike VM Fusion) can't create a dual-core virtual machine yet. If I set up multiple VMs, though, can they each run on different cores? Is that the best/only way to take advantage of the multip...

Why/How are two cores being used for trivial operations?   Asked on: 15 Nov 2008
I have not paid much attention to this before. When dragging a window, both cores show more or less equivalent usage. I then tried running a simple ruby script which loops something into the terminal, this too shows both cores at more or less similar activity. Thinking that it might be the output to the terminal that is using the second core, I silently looped basic arithmetic and once again both cores show strong activity (with overall CPU usage at 50%). Is something wrong with the CPU usage vi...
