After compiling, which files do I NEED?   Asked on: 02 Jun 2006
I've compiled VLC on Windows using Cygwin. A new exe is created in the vlc-trunk folder. If I run the exe inside this folder, VLC opens fine. If I copy the exe to another folder, it does not run correctly. What other files should I copy to another folder to be able to run VLC? I can't copy the entire folder structure because it takes up about 600MB's. What are the necessary files (after compiling) for VLC to run correctly in Windows?

Compiling glossaries and how often?   Asked on: 22 Sep 2008
I posted this in the wrong section and am now reposting: I have a glossary for a clinic with many doctors. For each doctor I have compiled multiple files into the glossary (I know I probably should do inidvidual doctors but I'm just starting out with IT and want to sort of "test the waters"). How often should I do compilations? and if I have compiled a really lot of files for each doctor, what do I do to keep 'updating' the glossary....Enrich or add individual entries on the fly??? By the way I...

I'm compiling with 1.5 but java is looking for 1.4 classes, why?   Asked on: 04 Nov 2008
Hello all, I need to compile my project with 1.5 and I have set everything correctly in my ant build script(I think) but I am getting the famous error: [javac] class file has wrong version 49.0, should be 48.0 [javac] Please remove or make sure it appears in the correct subdirectory of the classpath. I have been searching on Google for a couple of hours and read the whole thread on this that was locked. Most people with this error seem to want to compile with 1.4 but I'm compiling with 1.5 and f...

So what's the difference between Dev-C++ and gcc compiling?   Asked on: 05 Dec 2008
Dev-C++ is my IDE of choice, and I use Windows. I wrote a small program in C and it came out to 17k, which seems to be just about the smallest that programs get in Dev-C++. Well, I wanted my friend to try it out, but he uses Linux. So I fired up my Linux box and compiled a Linux version to send to him. The exact same source code came out to a program of 11k. That's a huge difference (35%). So what gives? What are the different compilers doing that cause this? My Dev-C++ is using whatever the def...

Compiling PHP with GD/Freetype support?   Asked on: 09 Nov 2008
I'm trying to build a stripped-down version of PHP by compiling from source with only what I need. I'm trying to add GD with Freetype using the RPMs of GD and Freetype. I've installed the "-devel" for each, added the "-with...-dir=..." for both and recompiled PHP, but while GD shows up in phpinfo(), it doesn't list Freetype support and the imagettf...() functions fail. Has anyone managed to recompile PHP against binary GD and Freetype? And does anyone know what I might be missing to make it work...

Compiling a custom Kernel? Is this possible with PCBSD?   Asked on: 07 Oct 2007
Hello again, I have been Playing around with both PCBSD and DesktopBSD for awhile now. I find I prefer the community here at PCBSD and it's philosophy. However, DesktopBSD 1.0 based on FreeBSD 5.5 is the only flavor of the two that I can get running stable on my desktop. I keep getting random crashes and reboots on both PCBSD 1.4 and DesktopBSD 1.6 RC which are both based on FreeBSD 6. I came across a post on DesktopBSD forums in response to another user with the same sort of problem and it was...

Compiling a XBMC for Windows build - some clarifications?   Asked on: 14 Sep 2008
After a problem with a recent build, I was directed to investigate the possibility of compiling a win32 build - (here) http://xbmc.org/forum/showpost.php?p...3&postcount=12 My primary use of this build is for skinning purposes (Not a win32 HTPC). I have followed up on this - read the wiki article (here) http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=HOW-TO_c...xpress_Edition But I do have some questions regrading this being a complete newbie with anything like this. 1. The article directs the SVN client to "https:...
