How many characters is too many characters?

In my story I have a lot of existing characters, as well as a lot of ideas for possible characters. I was just wondering if anyone had a rough idea of how many characters a reader can keep up with.
The MC's are:
-Will, the story is all told from his pov.
-Mercy, she's Wills soulmate, a faerie (I use this term very loosely) and the whole story focuses around what happened to them when they met.
-Rage, the 'evil' faerie
-Dante, one of Rage's henchmen
And smaller characters (who are still important...

i'm proposing that we set aside the fact that bleach characters are spirit entities and focus on techniques and powers (if not, only those from shaman king, kekkaishi, inuyasha or tactics can fight them). here's my anticipated battles:

Main Characters to Sage Characters?

I wasn't sure what else to call the archetype (I'm not that familiar with story writing), hence the term 'sage' character for lack of a better word.
