Teacher who claims to be a computer teacher?   Asked on: 18 Dec 2008
The teacher confiscated Linux CDs and reprimanded a student because she thought "Linux is not legal and only Windows should be in schools" and wanted to turn the HeliOS distributor over to the police: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...her-bans-linux Of course she now gets to meet the developer of HeliOS who would love to educate this educator about FOSS at her Superintendent office after Christmas break . I suggest she reads up on the subject. And while she is at it also discover FreeBSD Un...

What Have You Teacher Parents Gotten Your Child's Teachers?   Asked on: 18 Dec 2008
I've already received some pretty nice gift; one being a $40 gift card! While I could never afford to give that to my son's teacher (he's in Jr. High and has 7 teachers); I'm curious to know...what have you gotten your child's teacher? I do buy gifts for ALL my son's teachers because they are all wonderful teachers and I just can't "forget" any of them. WHen my son had just one teacher, I was able to spend a little more. Can you tell me what you're gotten your teacher?

Is dc's teacher a poor teacher?   Asked on: 10 Dec 2008
I'm reading the New Yorker and it talks about how a poor teacher covers on average half of the curriculum they need to cover in a school year.  A good teacher (not the best, just a good teacher) covers a year and a half of information in one school year.  So if dc had two poor teachers back to back, they would be much further behind than a student who had two good teachers back to back. One example they described was a preschool teacher who was reading the letters A for Apple.  Two little girls...

Are Grade 7 teachers elementary teachers?   Asked on: 06 Dec 2008
In Ontario, are Grade 7-8 teachers considered elementary or high school? Just curious whether my son's teachers (he's in Grade 7) are still negotiating as elementary school teachers, or are we lucky enough not to be part of the elementary school system.

Should non-teachers be Head Teachers?   Asked on: 20 Feb 2007
The role of Head teacher has always been a tricky one but with so many schools failing is it now time to consider have non-teachers appointed as heads of schools. I will argue that the role of head teacher has nothing to do with teaching. Evidence came this week from a report on headship, from the National Union of Teachers. This report, by Professor Alan Smithers and Dr Pamela Robinson of the University of Buckingham, listed 58 responsibilities that had been added to the head teacher's job desc...
