Obama doesn't want to bail out taxpayers?   Asked on: 16 Sep 2008
Quote: : Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said investors shouldn't expect taxpayers to bail them out when financial markets are in turmoil and proposed closer scrutiny of credit-ratings services. That's odd, Obama hasn't shown such reticence in the past when calling for the use of taxpayer money to bailout homeowners' bad borrowing decisions. I'm sure there's a nuance I'm missing. He's so deep.

Can US taxpayers sue Wall Street bankers?   Asked on: 29 Oct 2008
Now that the USG (taxpayers) are buying into major Wall Street banks, I'm wondering if we can sue negligent and greedy bankers. The question came up in my mind after reading in The Guardian tonight: Quote: : Top Wall Street bankers to receive $70bn pay deal Pay and bonus deals equivalent to 10% of US government bail-out package It seems to my legally uninformed mind that if we, as taxpayers, have a stake in Wall Street banks, we could sue the CEOs that led us into this disaster instead of doling...

Hey ILA....should the taxpayers be bailing out Alberto Gonzalez?   Asked on: 18 Nov 2008
Quote: : To defend him against charges that he politicized DOJ hiring practices, Alberto Gonzales will have a private attorney -- on the taxpayers' dime, reports McClatchy. The move, requested by Gonzo himself, will likely end up costing taxpayers about twice as much as a top DOJ attorney would have, according to the news service. Gonzales is being sued by a former high-ranking Justice official, Dan Metcalfe, on behalf of a group of his law students. An internal DOJ report found that, under Gonz...

Will U.S. Taxpayers Need A Bailout?   Asked on: 16 Oct 2008
President Bush says the move to partially nationalize large U.S. banks, including Bank of America and Wells Fargo, is necessary to "preserve" the free market. He may be right. But left unmentioned during this week's flurry of announcements from the Federal Reserve, the White House, and other government agencies are the potential perils. Not all the details are clear. It appears as though the Treasury will end up owning sizable chunks of U.S. banks for the foreseeable future, whether bank executi...

Prison Costs: Bill Taxpayers or Inmates?   Asked on: 09 Feb 2005
Source Quote: : (Source)JOLIET, Ill. -- Officials in one Illinois county want to change state law so they can bill criminals for their stay in the county jail. That subsidy costs taxpayers about $28 million in the 12-month period ending Sept. 30. "This is huge. This is so audacious and outrageous," said Pat Martin, an NDP MP from Winnipeg. "This means war....

This dosen't sound good (for Obama).
