Turn non raid into raid on live server?
Asked on: 23 Dec 2008
Is it possible to turn a non raided setup into Linux software raid, while it is live, and if it's the OS drive? Can you even software raid the OS drive remotely? I've been thinking about doing it for the redundancy (and possible slight performance boost for reads, but doing it more for redundancy). I'm using CentOS.

raid 5 and raid 0 how?
Asked on: 29 Nov 2007
Hi I have come across a server that has an array configuration as follows
physcial disks = 3 * 300GB
logical disks = 2
286GB in a RAID 0 Configuration (Logical Disk 1)
381GB in a RAID 5 Configuration (Logical Disk 2)
My question is how has they done this? There isn't any unused space of the array. So how have they created a one disk as raid 0 and left two disks to create a raid 5. Which I understand is impossible.
Or an I looking at this the wrong way.

RAID - Can I have two drives in RAID, and the other two standalone?
Asked on: 01 Nov 2008
Hello
I have two drives;
1. Maxtor (SATA) 500GB
2. WesternDigital (IDE) 400GB
And am planning on buying two more drives (unsure of brand yet);
1. (SATA) 500GB
2. (SATA) 500GB
I am planning on making the two new drives RAID 0.
But I want to keep my other two drives seperate from the RAID setup. In other words, I don't want them in RAID. I only want my new drives in RAID.
Please tell me if this is possible (I have an ASUS P5K-E WiFi motherboard).
Thanks in advance,
Panarchy

[VelociRator RAID 0 vs SAS RAID 0 vs SSD] OS drive for Nehalem rig?
Asked on: 21 Sep 2008
Hi.
A friend of mine is planning to build a Nehalem rig next November (X58, i7-940, 3x1GB D9GTR/S, 2x4870x2) and needs advice on which drive should he buy for the OS (Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP1), with a 500€ budget limit:
2 x VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300 GB 10000rpm in RAID 0 (229€x2=458€)
2 x Seagate Cheetah ST3146855SS 147GB 15000rpm in RAID 0 (229€x2=458€)
1 x Intel X-25 SSD 80GB (499€)
I guess Intel X-25 SSD in RAID 0 would be ideal, but its quite overpriced at the moment. He doesn't care...

Can RAID Controllers act as non RAID controllers?
Asked on: 19 Sep 2008
I want to build a software based RAID system, and need to
have simultaneous access to 24 drives. I will probably go
with SAS controllers and SATA drives. From what I recall
most drive controllers can only handle 4 drives, and most
motherboards only have four fast PCI express slots. I need a
way to hook up 24 drives to no more than 4 slots. One easy
way would be to get a SAS controller card that can handle 24
drives without specifying a RAID level. Can this be done?

i have the 8k7a+ with 2 ibm 60gxp 40gb drives connected as primary and secondary master. when i try to copy large ammounts of data to and from either drive, the cpu usage goes up to 100% and everything crawls. is there a documented chipset bug that would cause this?

Is it bad idea NOT to have raid?
Asked on: 19 Nov 2008
I don't have raid in my dedicated box as it's usually way more expensive. Instead I have two drives. I use one for OS/data and one for backups. I do nightly backups to the disk. I also do 3 weekly off site backups to my home server. So as far as backups I'm safe.
Now the issue is if the disk fails then my server is down. Do lot of people take this risk in order to save money? (often 50-100 per month)
In people's experiences, how long does it typically take for a data center to put in a new drive...
